ANIMAL GROUP – PENCIL PORTRAIT DRAWINGS

Commissioning a pencil portrait of a group of animal or multiple shots of the same animal can be a beautiful piece of artwork that will evoke some wonderful memories. Whether the drawing is of one dog, one cat or a few different animals, each subject can reflect the fun and loving personality of each animal. Capturing the wild and crazy side of each animal is the true key to a wonderful animal pencil portrait.

If its a portrait drawing using various photos of the same animal, it can give an all round perspective on the animals personality, maybe one of the animal jumping or playing with its toy, or maybe one of the animal sleeping, all these type of animal poses can give the drawing a multi faceted viewpoint of any one animal.

If its is a multi-subject pencil portrait you are wanting of your animal, then the composition usually works best with a large shot of the animal central, then surrounding it can be 3-4 smaller pencil sketches showing different poses. This approach gives the pencil portrait balance as well as telling a great visual story about the animal.

ANIMAL PENCIL PORTRAITS GROUP – SHOW THE WHOLE PERSONALITY

The most important aspect when creating an animal group pencil portrait is the reference. Capturing that one shot that sums up your pet is the key to a drawing that will evoke happy memories for years to come.

When commissioning a group animal pencil portrait you want a drawing that captures your pets look and personality perfectly. When I draw your animal portrait I work to the finest of detail, capturing their expressions and appearance perfectly. The sheen of their fur, that funny little bend in its ear, will be the details that makes the drawing so personal and special to you.

To help capture your pets look perfectly I prefer to have a good selection of reference photos to work from, this will allow me to capture your pets colour and shape exactly as sometimes a single photo can distort a certain aspect of the animal and if translated to the drawing can give an untrue representation to the overall pencil portrait.

You may have hundreds of photos already of your pet, but if you are taking new photos just for the commission its good idea to take these photos outside in natural daylight. This will give a perfectly true representation of the animals colouring as sometimes taking photos indoors can add yellow casts to the animals colour due to tungsten bulbs. Before taking any new photos it may help you if you view my online photo guide, its just got a few hints and tips on achieving the best reference photos. Whilst taking the photos if you have any questions please feel free to give me a call if you have any questions.

ANIMAL PENCIL PORTRAIT GROUP – VARIOUS PHOTO POSES

CLOSE UP HEAD SHOTS

As mentioned previously if you are wanting a group animal pencil portrait it is good practice to have a larger head shot of the animal central that is the main focus to the portrait drawing. This draws the viewer in and is normally the signature shot that typifies the animal perfectly.

COMPLETE ANIMAL FIGURE

This type of animal pose can compliment the main central photo perfectly as this will be slightly smaller and reflect a more lively aspect the the animals personality as well as give a better idea of the animals overall appearance. If you are wondering what type of full figure pose to do of your pet? Maybe one of it on its bed, maybe one of it sat looking at you or playing with its favourite toy, the possibilities are endless, and if your using a smart phone camera, snap away you can capture some of the best photos when you least expect it. If you have a whole bank of photos of your pet already and you would like to use on of those, feel free to send them over to me via email, I will have a look and let you know if they are suitable and which ones will work best in the overall pencil portrait drawing.

ANIMAL ACTION SHOT

Taking a shot of your animal in action can again reflect your pets personality really well. A shot of your dog jumping or cat playing with its toy, or even your hamster on its wheel can all make great pencil drawings that add to the overall group drawing. If you are taking photos of this nature you will need to plan a little, have you camera ready in sports mode (to stop blur) as action shots from animals can happen pretty fast. If you manage to capture some good shots, just give them a quick check over to make sure they have good clarity and are not blurred. Please have a look at my photo guide page, it may be a bit more use as it will go through the above in more detail.
