FORMAL PENCIL PORTRAIT DRAWINGS – FINERY AND STATURE

This is the most traditional type of pencil portrait, a head and shoulders shot of someone dressed in a suit or fine dress, making for a timeless pencil portrait drawing. These types of pencil portrait can be of a single person, or can be a group of two or three, as quite often this type of photo with people in formal attire is of more than one person, which will make this type of pencil portrait multi faceted

A lot of people commissioning this type of pencil portrait usually order it for a close family member or friend, who are also usually included in the drawing as well. The photo reference for the pencil drawing could be from a weddding, family gathering or any occasion where people tend to get dressed up, or may even be of your childs first day at school, all dressed up in the sparkling new school uniform. Just have a look through some of your old photos, and that special one photo thats close to you could make for the perfect pencil portrait, making for a lasting memory adorning your walls.

FORMAL PENCIL PORTRAIT DRAWINGS

If you’re thinking you would like a formal pencil portrait doing, the crucial thing to have captured in the photo is ‘the moment’, the moment the person is looking at their very best and their feelings of confidence and happiness. Capturing these emotions and looks in your pencil portrait drawing is what my primary focus will be, in addition to capturing the persons expression and facial details, creating the perfect formal pencil portrait drawing.

In order to capture this level of detail, the photos I use as reference needs to be of good quality. Ideally I would like 2-3 photos of the subject with one photo being the key image to use and the pencil portrait drawing. In having a variety of photos this allows me to get a more global visual representation of the subject, through different angles, colours and light settings. If you only have the one photo of the subject you would like me to draw don’t worry, it sometimes just helps if the photos aren’t of the best quality.

Sometimes people would like a combination of photos using to create their perfect pencil portrait drawing. Maybe use the pose and clothing of one photo, but use the head of another photo, this is fine as to capture the perfect image in one photo is sometimes quite difficult. If this is the case just let me know when ordering and I will happily talk this over with you.

You may be concerned that your photo is not good enough quality for me to use as reference for your pencil portrait, by all means feel free to email it over to me, I will respond within 24hrs to let you know if I can work with it. The rule of thumb with photographic reference is, if the image on your phone, or in a print, has well defined clarity and definition, then its usually great to use as reference. I do prefer to have the photos provided digitally as I enlarge them on my iPad to 300% in order to capture the tiniest details of the image. If you have prints thats also fine, they just need to be really clear so I can photograph them and enlarge them in the same way.

You can have your formal pencil portrait drawing in black and white or full colour, at sizes ranging from A5 through to A2. I can also mount and frame your pencil portrait if required, please let me know at the time of ordering so I can order it in time.

TYPES OF WEDDING PENCIL PORTRAIT DRAWINGS

PENCIL PORTRAIT DRAWINGS – TRADITIONAL HEAD AND SHOULDERS

A traditional head and shoulders portrait is usually where the subject is looking towrds the camera, holding a traditional stading pose. Normally these are photographed in a rigid way and partly set for the photo. As these photos are usually cropped to show the head and shoulders they give a great focus to the face and the expressions conveyed.

PENCIL PORTRAIT DRAWINGS – FAMILY AND GROUPS

This traditionally is the type of photos the whole family used to do once a year, all dressed in their sunday best. Nowadays these have diversified a little, to be more of a single person with their significant other, joined by maybe their child or family friend, which normally is shot in a far more relaxed manner. With group shots they can also have the added benefit of being photographed in a stunning location, maybe abroad in a beach or sunset setting. The best thing about this type of photograph used for a pencil portrait, is they are far more relaxed and often reflect genuine interaction between people which can make for a emotionally compelling pencil portrait.

PENCIL PORTRAIT DRAWINGS – FULL LENGTH FORMAL

This is a type of pose works well applied with the more traditional type of portrait and group portraits. These type of pencil portraits can allow for a more dramatic type of formal clothing, maybe ball gowns and dress suits, giving an air of elegance to the pencil portrait. In addition to this the setting can also enhance the subject of the overall portrait drawing. For instance the subject could be walking up the stairs in a stately home or dramatic architectural setting.
