GROUP OF DOGS – PENCIL PORTRAIT DRAWINGS OVERVIEW

A pencil portrait of a group of dogs or multiple poses of the same dog will make for a very interesting and beautiful piece of art. It may be of two or three dogs that you have, or could even be 3-4 different poses of the same dog, either way a pencil pet portrait with multiple poses can reflect the dogs true character and personality.

A dog pencil portrait showing multiple poses of the same animal can be a great way to show the different sides to the dogs personality, maybe a shot of it jumping, playing, running, or even resting, all add to make a great portrait of your best friend.

If the commission you are after is of a group of different dogs, the composition works best if there is one large headshot in the centre of the drawing, surrounded by 3-4 different poses of other dogs. This will give good balance to the overall composition and also make for a very interesting and exciting group pencil portrait.

ANIMAL GROUP – PENCIL PORTRAIT DRAWING – SHOW THE WHOLE PERSONALITY

One of the most crucial parts to commissioning a group pencil portrait is to have great reference, that one favourite pose of your dog that shows his/her true personality perfectly, will create a wonderful pencil portrait that you can enjoy for years to come.

The pose(s) needed for a group dog pencil portrait can be as varied as you wish and can be up to as many as six poses in the one drawing. When I undertake your group pencil portrait I work to a highly detailed level, capturing the smallest of details to create a pencil portrait of each subject that is highly photorealistic. When drawing dogs, the essence of creating a great pencil portrait is done by picking up on the signature attributes of the animal, maybe the dog has one floppy ear, or a very shiny coat, or maybe its just a particular look your dog gives you. Whatever individual attributes your dog has these elements will be captured perfectly to create you a group pencil portrait that you will treasure for ever.

When undertaking any commission I insist on good reference, as the drawing can only be as good as the reference provided. I usually have a good selection of 5-10 photos of each dog which allows me to get a good understanding of the dogs overall appearance and colour. A good selection of photos is better than just using a single photo as sometime just one photo can’t really capture the overall look and personality of the dog, which I like to add as much of in the drawing, to make it that bit more special to the owner.

As with most dog owners, having a vast selection of photos is nothing unusual, but if you are thinking of taking some new ones specifically for reference for your pencil portrait commission, it is best to take your photos outside. Using natural daylight gives a truer representation of the dogs overall appearance. Before you start shooting away, it may help to view my photo guide, it has a few handy hints and tips to help your achieve a great photo. If you want to send me over any photos you have or have photographed please feel free, I will let you know if they are good enough to use. The one simple key is if they enlarge to 200% original size and are still clear and crisp they are usually perfect to use.

DOG GROUP PENCIL PORTRAIT DRAWING – THE DIFFERENT POSES

PORTRAIT HEAD SHOT

A group dog pencil portrait works and balances perfectly if the main composition is made up by one central large head shot, surrounded by 3-4 other poses. This gives a central focus point to the viewer and also, with the surrounding alternate subjects/poses it gives a great overall viewpoint of the dog itself.

ISOLATED FULL DOG FIGURE

As this will be one of the supporting poses to the central subject, It will add a spark of energy to the portrait drawing, reflecting the dogs more lively side. There are many full figure poses you can have of your dog, one of it leaping in the air jumping for a toy? Playing in the garden with anther dog? the options are endless….However you are looking to photograph your dog, its best to just take loads, be snap happy as you will capture some of the best photos when you least expect it. If you have any questions about the photos you have or are taking, please feel free to drop me an email and I will get back to you with my advice.

DOG ACTION PHOTO

Taking an action shot of your dog can be a challenging task, dogs can be very spontaneous and do some things when you least expect. When looking to take an action shot its best to be patient and always have a smartphone of SLR camera at the ready. You can try and plan the photo by someone holding something high up that your dog can leap for or you dog leaping for a treat, whichever way you achieve your portrait reference, I just ask you make sure it is clear and has good definition. Please take a quick look at my photo guide, it can help sometimes and advise on the best lighting/scenario to photograph your dog.
