Having a great photo is key to any artist creating a great horse portrait drawing. As with all portrait drawings, for horse portrait drawings, having a photograph that is very clear with great tone in the perfect pose is paramount. With all horse drawings I like to capture the finest of details in order to create the most lifelike drawing of the horse, and in most cases exceed customers expectations, this is the main reason I insist on obtaining the best photographic reference possible.
You may have a very clear idea of the type of drawing you want, maybe that favourite photo you’ve always loved and now want as a portrait drawing?. Or you may be taking new photos, either way the photo needs to have great definition. If you are taking new photos, take lots and lots, with digital photography nowadays you can take hundred of photos with almost no cost attached.

Horse pencil portraits that have a very high level of realism make amazing drawings. The photorealistic nature of a high quality horse drawing is what every artist wants to achieve, yet only a handful can achieve. I work to the smallest of details using only the most detailed of reference to ensure all my horse drawing portraits have an extremely high level of realism that is often hard to distinguish the drawing from the photograph.
The type of pose you are wanting can vary quite a lot with horse drawings, from a head portrait drawing to the full horse in a standing pose and even poses of a horse jumping. Depending on what pose you are wanting can depend quite a lot on the size you have the horse drawing. Obviously if you are wanting a full figure pose of your horse, the size will need to be a minimum of A3 in order to capture a high level of detail, if it is any smaller the detail will be lost as the drawing will be too small to capture it.
The favoured type of horse portrait drawing is the head shot, a 3/4 angle of the horses head, often still wearing its bridle and reins. This style of horse drawing allows for a lot of detail to be captured with the pose being quite close up. Coloured horse drawing portraits are the favoured medium as well, as the colour of a horse is very much part of its identity and black and white just doesn’t give such clear visual representation.
You may have more than one photo you would like to use? Maybe the head pose of one horse with the background or setting of another, this is fine, photo reference often has to be combined to achieve the perfect horse portrait drawing. As mentioned above the horse portrait drawing can only a high level of realism if the reference is good enough, if the detail is not in the photo, for the most part, the detail won’t be in the drawing.
I can use a lot of artistic license, but if I go too far away from the reference the subject can start to look unlike its true identity. So remember, perfect reference, perfect portrait.

To make your order official all I need is a date you require the horse drawing, the size and style you would like and whether you would like it framed and mounted. Then just a small 20% deposit will secure the order. You can then send the photo you would like at a later date, in the knowledge you order is already in place.
