LABRADOR DOGS – AN INTELLIGENT BREED

Every dog breed has a completely different personality, from the most passive dogs like the New Foundland through to the more intelligent breeds like the traditional Labrador.

The Labrador, or Lab is a medium to large breed of dog and in one of the most popular dog breeds across the world.

As they are an intelligent breed of dog, they are very often used for  assisting the disabled and have great working dog capabilities. These working dog abilities are suited perfectly to guide dog training, as well as being the ideal breed of dog thats often employed across the world for roles in the military and police forces, due to their inquisitive nature.

In addition to these very valuable traits, they are also used in the arena of hunting, which stems from their original purpose of fishing dogs in Newfoundland, where they would assist the fisherman to bring the nets in and retrieve the catch of the day.

LABRADOR DOG PENCIL DRAWINGS – CAPTURING THE TRUE CHARACTER

When commissioning a Pencil pet portrait or dog drawing its crucial the artwork is a true reflection of your dog, both in looks and personality. Capturing your Labradors true character is my main focus to ensure you have a pet portrait you are going to be overjoyed with, that brings a smile to your face each time you look at it.

When I undertake any pet drawing I ask for at least 2-3 photographs that capture your dogs colour, expression and character. If you can supply more that great, as each one will give me a different insight into your dogs nature.

Capturing any dogs true colour requires photos that are taken in clear light, daylight is ideal, as it creates no additional colour tints to the dogs fur and reflects its true colouration. its for this reason I require 2-3 photos, so I can understand your dogs true colour and draw a perfect representation.

I have done many Labrador dog drawings over the years and their fur always manages to capture a lot of different colours. This short fairly wiry hair is perfect to draw though, being quite short hair, it shows how the skin flows over the skeleton and gives a very clear idea of the dogs true shape and size.

LABRADOR PET PORTRAIT DRAWINGS – CHOOSING THE RIGHT POSE

HEAD SHOT

A close up head shot is one of the most popular styles of pet portraits I am asked for. With a clear focus on the details of the dogs character and facial features, gives the viewer a clear insight into the dogs unique personality. Coupled with capturing the smallest of details of your labs fur coat, is what makes a truly stunning and memorable pet portrait your will love. See my gallery for inspiration

FULL BODY SHOT

With this style of pet drawing the artwork size will have to be larger than normal, in order for me to capture enough detail, due to it being a full body drawing of your labrador. The full body shot is a typical dog portrait pose from history that a lot of people used to favour, a picture of their beautiful dog sat outside there regal home. You can choose to have a portrait of your labrador sat looking straight at the camera, or laying in front of the fire, the choice is yours.  If you would like to discuss any ideas you have please just give me a call, I would love to hear from you and discuss things, so I can create the perfect labrador portrait for you. If you need any help achieving the perfect reference photo, it may help you to look at my PHOTO GUIDE.

ACTION SHOT

An action shot can convey your pets character and fun side in a great way, whether its your labrador playing with its toy or bouncing through the air for its ball. This style of pet drawing gives an amazing dynamic to the overall artwork and adds an extra dimension to the subject. The essential part of achieving great reference for an action shot pet drawing, is to capture as much of the animals detail and not have any blur on the photograph, normally occurring by the animals movement. Most mobile phones these days have sports modes to diminish dark and blur on moving subjects. If you are using and SLR camera simply have the camera set to a high shutter speed, or you can change to sports mode on most SLR cameras as well.

COMMISSION – DAVE THE CHOCOLATE LAB

ABOUT THE COMMISSION OF DAVE

Dave is a stunning brown labrador. The commission was drawn as head and chest shot with an isolated background. His owner was delighted with the portrait and requested a second portrait of his black labrador Jim. Dave’s owner requested I capture his personality, reflecting his slightly stubborn nature yet, his beautiful loving side.

TESTIMONIAL

“I was overjoyed with the pencil drawing of Dave, the likeness was incredible. I didn’t think you could get this level of detail from just using pencil crayons. I had no reservation about asking peter to do another drawing of my other dog Jim, superb talent thankyou”
